Cell wall function

 TOPIC# CELL WALL

1)CELL WALL

INTRODUCTION

It is type of organelles present in plants, bacteria and some type of fungi but totally absent in Animals. For the first time cell wall was discovered by robert hook in plant cell in 1665 earlier than protoplast.

DEFINITION

It is the outermost permeable and protective layer of plants, fungi and bacteria.

PLANTS cell wall is made up cellulose(carbohydrates)

FUNGI cell wall made up of chitin similar to cellulose but having amino group(NH2)

BACTERIA cell wall is made up murien also called as peptidoglycan made up of aminoacids and sugars.

basically cell wall is secreated by protoplasm of the cell.

FORMATION OF CELL WALL

cell wall is formed by golgi bodies of the cell.

TYPES OF CELL WALL

There are three types of cell wall

1)PRIMARY CELL WALL

It is the first and important wall of cell wall.In many plants cells only this wall is present.in some cells it is formed during extension of the cell.

its size is about 1-3 micrometer

it is made up of cellulose, hemicellulose, polysaccarides(non cellulosic),pectin mostly calcium pectate.

In this wall no salts are present and having no lignin(important point).

It is crystalline and optically active but less than secondary wall.

2)MIDDLE LAMELLA

This wall is present between different cells of plant tissue it is actually cementing substance which play role in holding cells of tissues.

its size is about 1 micrometer.

it is mostly present in woody plants.

it is also called as pecticied wall.

in it calcium pectate and lignin is present and important point is its having calcium salts.

3)SECONDARY CELL WALL

it is nearest to cell membrane and it is present in only some species of plants.

its size is about 5-10 micrometer.

it have cellulose ,polysaccarides(non cellulosic),no pectin and having salts of ca and mg(divalent ions) and potassium and silicon.

This wall is more crystalline and optically active.
