 TOPIC#8        PEROXISOMES AND GLYOXISOMES

 INTRODUCTION

It is small sub-cellular single membrane bounded bodies present in both animals and plants cells called as microbodies.

DISCOVERY:

It was discovered by de duve and his co workers in 1965 from liver and other tissues.

SIZE

its size is about 0.5 micrometer.

COMPOSITION

It is composed of proteins, lipids and enzymes.

LOCATION

In animals they are most common in liver and kidney cells.

In plants they are mostly present in leaves where it perform an important function.

 FUNCTION OF PEROXISOME

The peroxisome is same like lysosomes but its enzyme system is different than lysosomes.

In green plants it is involve in photorespiration in leaves where it convert glycolate into glyceine.

It also have enzyme peroxidase which convert hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen and in this way also maintain water level.

It also protects cells from corrosive effect.

In animals found in kidney and liver where it involve in destruction of toxic effects of alcohol.

GLYOXISOMES

It is also microbodie like peroxisome but is only present in Plants cells.

COMPOSITION

Proteins, lipids and enzymes like glycolic acid, catalase and oxidase.

LOCATION

They are most abundant in plant seedlings. And found in seeds of plants which are lipid rich. And in lipid rich seeds they are only present in during short period in germination of the lipid rich seed and it is absent in lipid poor seed.

MCQ POINT

It is absent in mendilian pea plant

FUNCTION OF GLYOXISOMES

Its primary activity is to convert fatty acids to carbohydrates in lipid rich seeds. And it also provide site for the breakdown of lipids.
