TOPIC # 9 CYTOSKELETON
CYTOSKELETON
INTRODUCTION
The existance of organized fibrous network of skeleton in eukaryotic cells.
DISCOVERY:
First seen by KOLTZOFF in 1928 and it is studied and confirmed by COHEN in 1977 by using Electron microscope.
According to cohen the eukaryotic cells contain fibrous network systems present in cytoplasm consist of different types of microtubules, microfilaments and intermediate filaments.
COMPOSITION
The cytoskeleton mostly composed of different type of proteins like Actin, myosin, tropomyosin and tubulin(main protein).
The cytoskeleton is composed of Microtubles,microfilaments and Intermediate filaments now we will study them in detail;
1-MICROTUBULES:
These are long, unbranched slender tubulin protein(specific and important protein) structures found near to nucleus in cytoplasm.
Its important function is assembly and disassembly( simply means arrangement) during cell division which finally lead to formation of some organelles like cilia, flagella, basal bodies and centrioles.
2-MICROFILAMENTS:
It is branched structure made up of important thin size protein Actin located near to cell membrane in cytoplasm.
Its Branches help in ameboid movement and cyclosis(mitochondria movement or cytoplasmic materials streaming ) in cytoplasm.
3-INTERMEDIATE FILAMENTS:
These filaments have diamter in between of those of microfilamnets and microtubules and present in between them in cytoplasm and provide strength to cell and also help in determining shape of cellular components and also maintaining cell shape.
OVERALL FUNCTION OF CYTOSKELETON:
1-Maintain cell shape.
2-Formation of some cellular organelles like flagella, cilia, basal bodies and centrioles.
3-Involve in cyclosis and ameboid movement.
4-Provide strength and support to cell.
5-Help in shaping cellular components.
