Carbohydrates

 TOPIC#4        CARBOHYDRATES

INTRODUCTION:

  It is an organic compound.

MEANING:

The word carbo stands for  carbon while hydrates stands for water.

Therefore carbohydrates are also called hydrated carbon because it have the same hydrogen and oxygen ratio (2:1) which is present in water.

DEFINITION:

                 The carbohydrates are polyhydroxy Aldehydes and Ketones or substances which yields these compounds on hydrolysis.

Also called as Saccarides(sugars)

The aldehydes and ketones are functional groups belongs to class carbonyl compounds.

    The general formula of carbohydrates is (CH2O)n.

ELIGIBILITY:

Every organic compound is not Carbohydrates .There is minimu eligibilty for compound to be called as Carbohydrates which is given below;

Simplest carbohydrates have minimum 3 carbons and 2 hydroxyl groups and 1 functional group(Aldehydes or ketones) is necessary.

Simplest carbohydrate with aldehyde group is called GLUCERALDEHYDE.

Simplest carbohydrate with keto group is called DIHYDROXY KETONE.

IN NEXT BLOG WE WILL DISCUSSED TYPES OF CARBOHYDRATES ON BASIS OF CARBON.
